Manual Therapy

Have you ever appreciated the relief and increase in mobility and comfort in your body after seeing a chiropractor? Animals can benefit from targeted treatment on soft tissue, and joint adjustments just like people. These treatments are classified as a type of manual therapy. There are many modalities of manual therapy such as stretching, massage, joint manipulation, myofascial release, acupuncture, and many more that exist and can benefit the health and comfort of our pets. Joint and spinal adjustments should only be applied when there are no risks of disk disease or fractures. Sometimes x-rays are warranted for safety and also provide more information as to where issues are located in the body. During a joint manipulation, a practitioner uses their hands to apply a short distance thrust at a precise angle that matches that of the direction of joint movement, which then allows the joint to return to a better and normal range of motion. The additional benefit to restoring proper joint alignment is freeing any impigments on surrounding nerves allowing them to fire and innervate tissues properly.

HLAH is happy to now provide manual therapy, specifically myofascial release and spinal adjustments. Myofascial release works on loosening the connective tissue that is beneath the skin and above the muscle and if used first can often reduce the number of subsequent joint adjustments needed. Dr. Josephine Wong received her certification from the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association(AVCA/ACCC) in 2022. The AVCA only grants certification to veterinarians or human chiropractors after they have completed standardized courses and testing. Dr. Wong understands that there are many options and ways to help our pets, and can make a plan specific to the needs of your animal. Complete treatment recommendations may involve exercises, stretches, or diet changes and supplementation. Manual therapies are gentle, and rarely is there cracking or popping during adjustments. Pets can become quite relaxed and pet parents can mistake it all for a massage. Whether you have a stiff geriatric pet or just want the best for your active cat or dog, manual therapy at HLAH is available to your pet.
